The Show-Me state has the shameful
distinction of being the puppy mill capital of the
United States. Missouri is home to more than 1,400
licensed commercial dog breeders, producing over
1/3 of all puppies sold in the U.S. and abroad. This
multi-billion dollar industry sells and transports
thousands of puppies each week. Many of these animals
are subjected to inhumane conditions despite the
passage of the Animal Care Facilities Act (ACFA)
in 1994 - a law intended to protect them. Ten years
later this law is still not being enforced.  more
